Tom Cruise to be on the other side of the stake in Van Helsing reboot

Tom CruiseTom Cruise looks set to go from sucking blood to killing blood suckers.

It has been announced that Cruise is set to star in Universal Pictures’ Van Helsing reboot. The last incarnation of that character was in Stephen Sommers’ 2004 film Van Helsing, which starred Hugh Jackman as Count Dracula’s nemesis. Cruise famously played a vampire in 1994’s Interview with the Vampire.

The film is to be produced by Star Trek screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who signed a two-year producing deal with Universal. They will also be producing a reboot of The Mummy, another monster series largely directed by Sommers. Neither are set to write the screenplays, though they have been hired to write the sequel to this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

Van Helsing represents another step in Cruise’s apparent career rejuvenation. For several years, his films had performed decently but largely under expectations, suggesting his star power was waning. But his latest film, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, was an enormous critical and financial success, and he has a starring role in this summer’s Broadway adaptation Rock of Ages. Later this year, Cruise will star in One Shot, an adaptation of one of the popular thriller novels in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series.
