Friday Box Office: “Ted” and “Magic Mike” exceed all expectations

Friday Box Office: "Magic Mike" and "Ted" exceed all expectationsMany agreed that the box office numbers for “Ted” and “Magic Mike” would be big, but nobody anticipated that they would be this big. Between those two movies, plus “Madea’s Witness Protection,” there were just as many sell-outs at megaplexes last night (if not more) than there will be when “The Amazing Spider-Man” opens on Tuesday. “Ted” exceeded my entire opening weekend prediction in its first day and “Magic Mike” nearly pulled off the same feat. These are huge hits.

“Ted,” in fact, is on its way to achieving the best opening for an R-rated comedy, ever. “Magic Mike” is perhaps even more impressive, because it’s essentially an indie film, made on a $5 million budget (imagine those profits). As our James Frazier wrote in his review, the advertising is essentially a lie, but boy, did the lie work. That being said, Deadline is reporting that the CinemaScore for “Magic Mike” was an a-OK “B,” so women seeking a huge dose of beefcake must not be too bothered by WB’s bait-and-switch. “Ted,” by comparison, got an even stronger “A-.” Check out the full top 10 chart…
