Weekend Box Office: “Snow White” the fairest of the wide releases, “Moonrise” of the limited releases

The box office winners of the weekend were "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Moonrise Kingdom".“Snow White and the Huntsman” reigned supreme at the box office this weekend, with nearly double the gross of its closest competitor, but you could have guessed that had you read our Friday report.

The real news worth mentioning is that Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” after setting the per-theater-average record for a non-Disney release last weekend, continued strongly in an expansion to 16 total sites. So strongly, in fact, that it nearly cracked the top 10, coming in at #13 with $849,000 of box office sales. Those are strong numbers, and the expansion doesn’t stop next weekend, as distributor Focus rolls the indie charmer into 48 more sites for a total of 64. (And that’s if they don’t decide to step things up faster than originally planned, in light of such encouraging returns.)

Also notable on the specialty front was “Bernie,” starring Jack Black, which was able to muster another strong weekend gross of $937,000 from 302 theaters, good for twelfth place in its sixth week of release.

But you’re probably jonesing for the top 10. Check out the full chart after the jump…
